The Journey of a Movement can be defined by specific steps.

1. The Big Idea

A charismatic leader or figureheads present a revolutionary approach pledging a cure for alienated and vulnerable people.

And so it goes. Plans are in motion to challenge the establishment overseas. Tensions are rising. Conflict emerges from the sidelines. An isolated player, vulnerable, anxious, the slogan POSITIVE INTENT written on his body as a statement, has stumbled through the lines and is being led away in secrecy for a temporary assignment in county cricket.

Do you recall the early days, when optimism reigned? The era of early Bazball, of uninhibited aggression.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Movement founders guarantee a reboot, a brighter tomorrow, love, redemption among a group who all believe in the method.

How did it feel at first? Just men on a balcony enjoying success. Body art. Strength. Jawlines. Confident masculinity. Admittedly, The team often say they don’t use the label, which is funny since it’s not recognized, what was that spectacle?

However, everyone understands the concept. It’s Harry Brook attempting a move so depraved it’s beyond belief. It’s the excitement of the leader in his final form, a demeanor suggesting: thoughtful warrior, beard made of wood, hair woven from beaver hide, genuinely raw you half-expect to notice and find him positioned in the field bare-chested and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the opener still being allowed addressing the media, out there looking like a happy little woodland creature in a waistcoat, uttering phrases such as we are actively deconstructing the orange. And yes, the energy, initially, was uplifting.

3. A New Life

Building period. Togetherness strengthened through repetition of the cult’s slogans. These principles are often illogical as a loyalty check.

Is it just me? The reaction, the outrage, the sense of betrayal post-defeat appears excessive, too much. The performance was poor on the field, as they often do in Australia. They were savaged defensively for a couple of hours as plans unraveled, manipulated by Travis Head playing aggressively but smarter, adjusting to the pitch, an athlete shining with brilliance.

Currently, we see the attacks, the anger, the perception of the team as a disgrace. The feeling seems to be that defeat must be total, they should be dismantled, to be purged, destroyed, destroyed via traditional methods of the pace attack, the simple basics of the veteran, out there celebrating successes modestly like he’s just been given a pleasant gift. How will they respond?

4. External Conflict

Problems arise because of mistakes. Yet, mistakes are denied. It begins to thrive on anger towards critics.

In truth, approaching from the second Test, we have now reached a critical juncture in the lifespan of this approach. They might succeed in the next Test with bold tactics. Alternatively, they could lose just as quickly. Should they fail it seems we could be witnessing the death cult phase.

Ahead of this, a couple of points to consider regarding this. More than two years ago, back in those heady early days, of optimism and energy, a column appeared calling it a phenomenon. There was outrage, which was helpful because everyone knows a method to show lack of cult status is when its acolytes respond with anger denying scrutiny of its truths.

What has happened lately is just as interesting. It seems that hating Bazball has turned into a movement. Online outrage is widespread, disappointed commentators, pictures of upset supporters abroad cheated out of three days of cricket, similar to timeshare owners seeking justice.

Conversely, there is the broader context of Australia’s more nuanced deep-seated frustration at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, stating, the methods you value and have developed as one way of separating yourself from the opposition, it’s just a joke after all.

And this is the real point. All movements are similar. Bazball was a cult since the sport itself is insular. Or rather, the team has long been exclusive, a group, a private event, an insular community with a long history of tradition and mystery defining it. This has always been a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the British pastime of England, the pioneering brand. And notably, the country is a phenomenon, a structure of hidden ranks, a monarchy still exists.

England’s cricketers have been sealed up within this world for years. Seeking change, to create a less brutal environment, they are simply replicating their upbringing, forming a new circle, an exclusive group, but doing it this time with a modern squad and a mentor who wants you to be yourself if you fit the mold.

Live where your feet are. Confront risks. But no matter how fast and far you run, things stay similar.

Considering this, it is perhaps the moment to have some sympathy for the approach, to appreciate its good points, that are numerous. What is Bazball? Promoting liberation. Challenging orthodoxies. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
