New research reveals that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such medications must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
