At least 13 people killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
