There are numerous candidates for the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.
According to a new book, though, that honor belongs to the automated sawmill conceived by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before mechanised sawing, constructing a simple trading ship required approximately ten sawyers working over three months,” notes the author. “With wind-driven sawmills, the same quantity of processed timber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Owing to this rapid mechanical saw, which turned logs to boards using almost no human effort, Dutch builders could construct ships more quickly than any other nation, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Dutch naval, financial and artistic supremacy across Europe and the globe.

The inventor's sawmill, argues the writer, represented “humanity’s initial authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. A single part transformed the circular movement into vertical action for the cutting blade.
